What do I need to say when I report a crime ?

When you report a crime/incident – insist on a log number.

NEVER Think that a crime/incident is too insignificant to report – there may have been several others of the same type and your information may help the police to complete the puzzle.  The more people who ring in about a particular crime/incident will  help your road/area to become a crime hotspot which will receive extra policing  for a period of time.

AS A NHW MEMBER You are recognised as  a serious source of information by the police so state your name and the fact that you are a member of the NHW.

What are the duties and advantages of becoming a Street and Area Co-ordinators ?

  • You are the eyes and ears of police by informing them of any unusual happenings.
  • You become part of a closer community
  • You have more clout with the police as part of a large group
  • You receive help and advice from Borough Watch
  • You have the opportunity to go to Crime Reduction Group Meetings at the Civic Offices
  • You will be kept up to date with any information relevant to your area and will distribute it to the homes that you look after.
  • You will be supported by the Borough Watch Committee in any dealings with the police.
  • You will have the opportunity to attend Borough Watch Association Cheese and Wine evenings in your own Ward and be able to speak to your Ward PC, PCSO and at least one of your Ward Councillors.
  • You will enjoy the feeling that you are doing something constructive.
  • You will help to look after the old and vulnerable who can’t fend for themselves and to turn your Street/road/area into a caring community.

How is Neighbourhood Watch funded ?

Hertsmere Borough NHW is funded by Hertsmere Borough Council in the amount of £1500 per annum so money is available for room hire for launches, meetings etc and expenses incurred by co-ordinators who are required to supply invoices.  Money is also available to assist the old and vulnerable by supplying them with security equipment free of charge.  Details are put before the Committee, discussed and decision taken.

How do I start a watch in my road ?

Please contact Derrick Sweeney NHW Liaison Officer on 01727 796650.

What do I do If I am a victim of a crime or incident ?

If this is an emergency, with the culprit still in the area, phone 999, or non-emergency phone 0845 33 00 222

Then contact the Area Co-ordinator or if there isn’t one circulate the details to all co-ordinators  in your road for distribution

Then contact your Ward PC so he/she is made aware and can engage the necessary Agencies ie. Victim Support, Youth Action Worker, ASBO Officer, Dog warden, Environmental Health etc. etc.
